In memoriam : Colin Harvey

Former cricket coach, CCA Treasurer, umpire and match referee/manager
Colin George Harvey, a former Treasurer of the Canadian Cricket Association, a cricket umpire and match manager at local, national and international levels, died in Toronto on November 4th, 2012. Colin Harvey had served as a cricket coach at Upper Canada College, where he was a teacher.
An announcement in “The Globe and Mail” (seen November 10th ) states: “Classical music and sailing were his loves, but his passion was cricket. He stood as an umpire and match manager in local, national and international matches, served as treasurer for the Canadian Cricket Association (Cricket Canada) and was a senior member of the Cricket Canada Umpire Certification committee.”

Colin umpired in a warm-up game between Indian and Canada before the 1997 Sahara Friendship Cup. He as an umpire at the 2002 ICC European Championship and a match referee during the ICC Americas Under-19 Championships in 2005 and 2007. He also umpired in the 2005 ICC Americas Under-19 event. He was the TV or third umpire for the two day match between Canada and the West Indies A in August 2002.
A service celebrating Colin Harvey’s life is to be held at the Church of the Transfiguration, 111 Manor Road East, Toronto at 1pm on November 13th, 2012. (Manor Road East lies east of Yonge Street, between the Davisville and Eglinton subway stations, the Church is at the top of the hill.) A reception follows at the Toronto Cricket Club, 141 Wilson Avenue, Toronto.
Colin Harvey was born in Blandford, Dorset, England on January 29, 1934. “He trained for the British Merchant Navy, from the age of 14, aboard HMS Conway, the flagship of Nelson’s day, and travelled the world as a navigating officer, before emigrating to Canada in 1958.”
“After three years in the Toronto police force he trained as a teacher and spent over 25 happy years at Upper Canada College as math master, cricket coach and finally Head of Security. ”
Colin is “lovingly remembered by Jennifer, his wife of 50 years, sons Philip and Richard (Cristina), granddaughter Alessandra, and sister Liz. Colin will be missed by his sister-in-law Linda (Peter), his nephews, best friend Owen (Marlene) and many friends everywhere whose lives he touched.”
Colin had a long battle with skin cancer and his family extended thanks to Dr. Kevin Imrie in the palliative care unit at Sunnybrook Hospital, as well as the many doctors and nurses who looked after him, and to the PERC department at the Women’s College Hospital.
