Canada beat Kenyans for 5th place

Canada beat Kenya for the second time in two days as the sixth and fifth place finishers matched up in the play-off. Canada again put in a good bowling performance, and only a good last wicket stand allowed Kenya to reach 190. Canada struggled in reply, losing half their wickets for 81 but Surkari’s 49 saw them home for a comfortable 3 wicket win.

As in yesterday’s match, Canada won the toss and put Kenya in. Bhatti made the first breakthrough, getting both openers leg-before in his opening spell. Baidwan bowled well again, conceding 10 runs from 6 overs as the Kenyans struggled. The Kenyans went from 64/2 to 73/5, with Cheema and Desai taking a wicket each, and Hansra contributing a run-out. Odoyo and Wesonga almost doubled the score in a 72 run partnership before Baidwan dismissed both with consecutive balls when he returned for a second spell. Cheema was also close to a hat-trick with wickets with consecutive balls to reduce Kenya to 153/9. A spirited last wicket partnership took the score to 190. Baidwan took 2/25 from 10 overs, and Cheema 3/36.

In reply Canada got off to a promising start, only to lose both openers to unwise shots. Barnett yet again got into the twenties, only to be caught and bowled, Cheema’s miserable tour with the bat continued when he was run out for just one (from 18 balls), leaving Bagai and Surkari, yet again, to salvage Canada from 81/5. They put together an excellent partnership and took the score to 166 before Surakri was dismissed for 49. Bagai (39) was also out 9 runs still required but Hansra struck two boundaries for a last over victory.
