Cricket league sports new look with competition outside Toronto (Markham Economist and Sun)

When the Markham Softball Cricket League takes to the pitch this season it will feature a slightly different look.
The club will be involved in a round-robin tournament and will face entries from the Brampton, Toronto and Mississauga cricket clubs.
The matches will take place at the club’s home pitch at Elson Park starting May 26 and continue each Sunday, capped off with the final July 5.
Nigel Vasagam, Markham league founder, is excited with the new format as the circuit enters its 11th season.
“It’s something different than what we’ve done in the past. We’re starting with a short, modified version with four softball cricket teams that aren’t just from Toronto.”
Should the format show promise, Vasagam hopes it might spur interest from other areas in the province to join next year.
“I think we’re getting there. Maybe next year we can get teams from places like Whitby, Ajax or even Oakville,” he said. “It’s intriguing.”
