Ontario Colleges indoor cricket is ticking along as an extramural sport with the Challenge Cup set to take place at Humber College’s north campus in Etobicoke on Thursday (March 28, 2013). Looking around a number of college websites it seems more Ontario colleges are now participating in inter-college cricket (extramurals), although this impression was gained from a far from scientific or complete survey.
Centennial College won the Humber College Tournament on November 9, beating Humber College north campus 51-50 in the final. Centennial had beaten Humber College North, Seneca Newnham and Sheridan in round robin group play before winning against Humber College Lakeshore in a qualifier and then beating Sheridan 33-18 in the semi-finals.
Sheridan came through to win the Centennial tournament on November 23, beating Centennial 36-34 in the final. In round-robin qualifying play Centennial beat George Brown (44-42) and University of Toronto Mississauga (52-32) but were beaten by Georgian College (42-27). Centennial beat U of T Mississauga (56-38) in the semi-finals. This tournament also included Cambrian College (Sudbury) and Humber College.
Sheridan College hosted a tournament at the Davis Campus in Brampton on February 8.
U of T Mississauga campus hosted a six-team tournament on March 15. In the East group, U of T Mississauga Blue beat Humber Lakeshore (13-12) but lost to Seneca Newnham (31-32). Humber Lakeshore bounced back to be Seneca (29-26). In the West group Humber North beat U of T Mississauga White (34-29) and Fanshawe (London, Ont) (31-27). U of T White came second in the group thanks to a win against Fanshawe (25-24).
Seneca then beat Fanshawe (37-25) and U of T Mississauga White beat Humber Lakeshore (42-26) to reach the semi-finals. Humber North kept up winning ways with a 38-33 semi-final win over Seneca while U of T Mississauga Blue beat U of T Mississauga White 50-37 in the other semi-final. In the final, U of T Mississauga Blue hit 30 and just hung on to win the tournament, limiting Humber North to 29.
There have doubtless been some other indoor cricketing college and university events, some internal to a college, campus or university (intramurals), in Ontario and in other parts of Canada over the winter but at least a few games and events have gained a bit of a mention. With a bit more support and help, perhaps indoor cricket might progress to rise from “extramural” status to “varsity” status in the Ontario colleges scene.
