Mississauga’s Father Goetz qualify for GTA Girls High School Playoffs

Mississauga’s Father Michael Goetz’s female cricketers qualified for the 2013 CIMA Mayor’s Trophy Greater Toronto Area (GTA) Girls High School playoffs thanks to wins against St Joseph’s and T.L. Kennedy in qualification action on Monday (May 26) at the Iceland cricket ground. The deciding action came with a seven wicket win against St Joseph’s Secondary School where Father Goetz reached victory from the last ball of the allotted ten overs. Father Goetz and St Joseph’s each beat T.L. Kennedy by nine wickets. St. Joseph’s win against T.L. Kennedy was also achieved off the last available ball.
Opening bat Charlene D’Mello hit 24 runs for St Joseph’s who, thanks to a liberal number of wides (32 wides), reached 69 for six wickets from ten overs against Father Goetz. Dhawani Agrawal made seven runs.
It should be recognized that the opportunities to play cricket for females are somewhat limited at present, and this year there had not been any senior girls indoor schools cricket tournament in Mississauga. An event that is normally one of the few opportunities for girls to develop cricketing schools. Venturing outdoors has introduced some notable winds during the current CIMA/CIBC Trophy qualifying events, winds often well beyond a breeze either straight down the wicket, or cross-winds (with and without rain, or bursts of intense sun).
Lannae A took three wickets for 25 runs from three overs and Haressa Attique took two for 16 in the St Joseph’s innings. Haressa Attique followed with seven runs, opening the innings for Father Goetz, before being run out. In the end, a fourth wicket partnership between Uma (4 not out) and Farwa Ali (8 not out) that used up the full ten overs carried Father Goetz to victory, thanks to more wides being conceded by St Joseph’s.
T.L. Kennedy scored 59 for five wickets against Father Goetz with wides being the major scorer. Indeed, wides reached 48 – the same as the number conceded by St Joseph’s against Father Goetz. Three of the five wickets were run outs, which might again reflect the limited opportunities to play together as a team, or even for playing outdoor cricket for young Canadian female cricketing prospects.
Amanada Pereira scored 27 not out to lead Father Goetz to a nine wicket win after eight overs. T.L. Kennedy conceded 26 wides and 2 no-balls in Father Goetz winning total of 60 for one wicket.
Sadhana Rimal scored 29, Fakhia Baig 9 and wides 48 as T.L. Kennedy made 89 for four wickets against St Joseph’s. Dhawani Agrawal took two wickets for 13 from two overs. Fakhia Baig soon took the wicket of Madison Burrel for a duck, but a standout innings of 55 not out from Charlene D’Mello, supported by 12 not out from opening bat Amna Tallat and 24 wides just carried St Joseph’s to a winning 92 for one wicket at the end of the tenth over.
My understanding is that Father Michael Goetz will play York Memorial (Toronto) in the inaugural Greater Toronto Area Girls High Schools CIBC Trophy final this coming Saturday at Sunnybrook Park, Toronto.
