The CIMA Mayor’s Trophy, which historically has included the “Spirit of Cricket” tag as part of the efforts to promote cricket in Toronto, is taking place this coming Saturday (June 22, 2013) at Sunnybrook Park, Toronto. The Guests of Honour at this event are scheduled to be Toronto’s Mayor Mr. Rob Ford and the global President of CIMA Mr. Malcolm Furber.
Official ceremonials are due between noon and 12.30pm on Saturday. Play on the three grounds will begin at either 8am or 9am with three separate cricketing competitions. One of these events, set for the North pitch, involves the Kaisoca Ladies Cricket Club plus corporate and public entities for the Mayor’s Trophy. The Media Trophy is to take place on the West Pitch and the Accountants Trophy is being played on the East pitch. Closing ceremonies are said to be at 5.30pm, although the finals for two of the events are allocated the 5pm until 6pm time slot.
Competing teams:
Mayor’s Trophy (North pitch): GO Transit, Kaisoca Ladies, Toronto Police (who form group 1A and play in the morning). CIBC, Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and Bombardier (who form group 1B and play in the afternoon). The group winners meet in the event Final.
Media Trophy (West pitch): CBC, Toronto Star and Rogers (who form group 2A and play in the morning). Metro News, The Globe and Mail and the Toronto Sun (who form group 2B and play in the afternoon). The group winners meet in the event Final.
Accountants Trophy (East pitch): Deloitte, Ernst and Young, CMA (Chartered Management Accountants), Grant Thornton, KPMG and Price Waterhouse play six matches, then four teams advance to playoff semi-finals and the semi-final winners then compete for the Accountants Trophy.
More information is available on the CIMA Canada website. The event comes with an open invitation to attend and see how cricket is played. Perhaps some will pass by the grounds and gain an initial appreciation of cricket which may, one day, month, or year develop into passion for the game. It might be particularly useful if some developed a passion for being cricket scorers and umpires, or administrative volunteers who gain the notion (via knowledgeable media types) that the scores from matches and events should be pushed out into the community on a timely basis so even more gain some understanding, appreciation, passion, love or even curiosity about cricket which might lead to increased sponsorships that become sustainable as news of major games broadens on a timely basis!
But, in the short term, knowing the outcome of some events within two or three days to a week might remain more of a normal standard. But a standard on which to improve.
Best wishes to all involved in the 2013 CIMA Mayor’s Trophy.
