Canadian women lose to Thais

Thailand won the toss and batted against Canada at Malahide, in a match reduced to 18 overs/ side following a delay due to rain. Thailand have made 92/6. The first wicket fell to a run-out as the Thai bats tried to steal an overthrow. Monali Patel removed the dangerous Chaiwai, and Canada got a break when Tippoch was run out when Patel deflected a straight drive onto the non-striker’s stumps. Patel struck again next ball when Boochatham was stumped – 45/4 in the 12th over. Sutthiruang (23*) guided the Thais to a respectable total. Play was been called off for the day due to the return of heavy rain.
The Canadian Women reached 79 for eight from 18 overs, so lost by 13 runs against Thailand when the Shield Semi-final resumed on Tuesday in Dublin. Opener Patel gave Canada a promising start with 20 from 22 balls before being bowled (Canada 31 for 2, 5.5 overs). There was hope as Turik and Shabbir moved the total to 56 for 3 after 13 overs, but captain Turik was caught next ball for 14 and four wickets fell soon after, three being run outs. Shabbir was 18 not out when the Canadian innings closed.
Canada now plays Japan on Wednesday in the match to decide 7th place.

Canada’s women need to beat Thailand in today’s Shield semi-final of the ICC World Cup Qualifier to have a chance to face Zimbabwe in the match to decide fifth place on Wednesday. Zimbabwe’s number eight Precious Marange top-scored with 13 for her side on Monday in Dublin to raise the score from 30 for six wickets after nine overs to an eventual winning 59 for seven from 16 overs. Marange’s 13 runs had raised Zimbabwe to 52 for seven. Japan, who lost to Canada on Saturday, had scored 58 all out from 18.4 overs. Japan’s captain Shizuka Miyagi made 9 with the bat, wides leading with 14 runs. Opening bat Loren Tshuma made 12 for Zimbabwe.
Pakistan knocked off 66 runs from 14.1 overs in the battle for world cup places against Ireland this morning. Ireland was bowled out for 65 in the twentieth over, Kim Garth lead with 38 not out. Perhaps Ireland would have made some more runs without a run out involving Garth and Claire Shillington that left the women from the Emerald Isle on 10 for two, but reality is what counts. Three Irish batters fell stumped to Pakistan’s slow-left armer Sadia Yousuf, who captured four wickets for nine runs from four overs.
Ireland will have a chance to challenge for the third qualifying spot in the World Cup T20 on Wednesday against the losers of the Sri Lanka-Netherlands semi-final. Few would expect the Dutch to beat Sri Lanka, based on results and performances in this qualifier, so far.
Cricket Europe reports that Isobel Joyce won her 100th cap for Ireland in Saturday’s loss to Sri Lanka. Claire Shillington is the other member of the Irish women’s 100 club. It could be some time before one of Canada’s women makes a 100th appearance in an international game, particularly if only games against full national or regional (West Indies) teams were counted.
Cricket Europe’s website includes a set of photos from last weeks game between Ireland and Canada, as well as the story about Isobel Joyce’s 100th cap. (EN)
