Canada lost to UAE by 46 runs in a ICC World Cricket League Championship 50-over match today at Maple Leaf CC, King City. UAE posted a challenging target of 269, thanks to an excellent unbroken partnership of 149 between Shaiman Anwar (102*) and Rohan Mustafa (68*). In reply Canada struggled against the pace of Mohammed Javeed falling to 63/3. Gunasekera (50) and Limbada (58) helped rebuild the innings but then wickets tumbled and Canada fell well short.
UAE batted first on a pitch that offered help for the pace bowlers Pervez and Baidwan – plenty of movement in the air, and the odd ball lifting sharply off a length (it might have been interesting to see how Jeremy Gordon would have fared). Cheema dropped a tough chance at mid-on in Pervez’s 2nd over but Baidwan had Arshan Ali very well caught at 2nd slip by Daesrath in the next over. Abdul Shakoor decided that hitting out was the best policy and slogged Baidwan over mid-wicket for six, and Khurram Khan cut a four as they took 12 off the 7th over. This was followed by 14 off the next over as the UAE took some risks with the field in. Khurram Khan took one chance too many as he tried to hit Baidwan over mid on and was caught by Hansra. Shakoor was dropped again, a difficult chance for the fielder running in from deep cover as the 50 came up in the 10th over. Baidwan got one to lift sharply and catch Shakoor’s glove, nearly another chance for Daesrath diving forward at slip. Junaid Siddiqui came on and had Shakoor caught behind trying to cut for 32. Patil and Anwar took the total to three figures after 26 overs. Daesrath was brought on to bowl and he broke the 68 run partnership right away, bowling Patil who was surprised by a quicker ball. Shaiman Anwar advanced to a good half-century as UAE accelerated in the middle overs. Canada had trouble stemming the flow of runs as Anwar and Rohan Mustafa took the total past 200 with a combination of big hits and pushing for easy singles. Anwar had a stroke of luck when a skied hit fell between three fielders, and Mustafa struck a spectacular back-foot six over extra cover, to follow a big straight hit. The runs continued to flow, with Shaiman Anwar completing his hundred off the final delivery of the innings. Canada fell below the standards they have set themselves in the field in recent matches, and perhaps regretted resting Gordon and Osinde, who might have enjoyed the lively wicket early on.
Canada’s reply got off to a poor start, when Patel under-edged a cut onto his stumps. Kumar came in, struck three classy boundaries but was then caught at slip, and then Bagai was bowled, all three wickets falling to Mohammed Naveed. Limbada and Gunasekera were forced to re-build the innings, and the required run rate reached a run per ball. They brought the hundred up in the 22nd over with some good running between the wickets. Gunasekera completed a patient half-century but then stepped away to square leg to attempt an extravagant cut and was bowled. Daesrath smashed a straight six, but then was bowled next ball, and Canada were 135/5. Cheema hit a couple of sixes, but then was stumped for 20. Limbada made 58 before hitting a long hop straight to mid-on and Hansra after looking in great touch was caught and bowled for a 28-ball 31. Canada were all out for 223.
