Canada lose to UAE in second 50-over match

Six for Hiral Patel

Canada have lost the second 50-over match against the UAE by 2 wickets. They made 179/9 after being put in to bat. Hiral Patel (53) got Canada off to a good start but some excellent spin bowling, led by Nasir Aziz’s 4/20 caused the middle order trouble, with no boundaries for 17 overs and wickets tumbling as Canada tried to accelerate. UAE made a solid start but four wickets from captain Rizwan Cheema led to a tense finish, but UAE came out on top.

Canada batted first, looking to even the series after a disappointing loss on Tuesday. Gunasekera made 9- a rare failure this summer, but Patel was striking the ball well, and advanced to a run per ball 50 with a big six. Unfortunately he tried something similar off the next ball and was stumped. Bagai and Limbada took the score past 100 in the 23rd over. They kept the scoreboard moving with singles but went 12 overs without a boundary after Patel was out. Limabada made 31 before being bowled trying to steer a straight off-break to third man. Bagai finally hit the first boundary for 17 overs – a square cut for four. The batting power play was taken in the 36th over and was greeted with a maiden as Canada struggled with some good spin bowling. Bagai also reached the ropes with a reverse sweep but then Daesrath tried a slog-sweep, hitting a high catch to mid-wicket – 136/4 with 13 overs to go. Nasir Aziz had bowled 7 overs for just 10 runs before Hansra swept him for 4 in his 8th over. Bagai tried to reverse sweep him twice, and was caught off the second attempt – 38 from 71 balls. Hansra (16) tried a big hit 2 balls later and was caught off another skier, this time to cover. Cheema tried to pull Nasir Aziz over the longest boundary on the field and was very well caught on the ropes. Baidwan was the next to perish to a catch in the deep as Canada lost 4 wickets for just 10 runs. Nasir Aziz bowled superbly – 4/20 off 20 overs. Junaid Siddiqui hit a six, and then became the sixth Canadian to perish to a skied catch – although given it was the last over it was excusable.
After 42 overs of spin, Canada opened with Gordon and Osinde. Abdul Shakoor came out swinging, and after hitting three boundaries (two off the edge) was bowled by Osinde. At the lunch break UAE were 29/1 from 6 overs. Gordon bowled a hostile opening spell conceding just 9 runs from 5 overs, but it was when he was replaced by Junaid Siddiqui that the next wicket fell, Khurram Khan caught at point. Patil hit Siddiqui for six but then was caught off him by Baidwan – 65/3 after 17 overs. Arshad Ali and Shaiman Anwar brought up the hundred and were able to accumulate without taking risks given the modest Canadian total. They put on 58, a very similar partnership to Bagai and Limbada’s in the Canadian innings, but then a change of bowling did for Arshad Ali (35 from 99 balls) driving straight to point. Cheema struck twice in the next over, as Rohan Mustafa tamely drove to mid-off, an easy catch for Osinde and Mohammed Azam edging an off-cutter to the keeper – 137/5. Shaiman Anwar is in excellent form, and progressed to his half-century. Amjad Javed smashed a couple of boundaries off Gordon before Junaid Siddiqui had him caught to keep Canada in with a chance – 18 to win with three wickets in hand. Cheema took the crucial wicket of Shaiman Anwar (57) with 14 runs still required. Gordon was brought back to bowl at the tail and had Nasir Aziz dropped at slip- and the ball went for four. That proved to be as close as Canada got as the 9th wicket pair got UAE home in the penultimate over. Cheema took 4/16.
