Guyana made light work of far visiting opponents, the ICC Americas, demolishing them in the first match by seven wickets. Guyana won the toss and elected to field, giving the Americas first knock. They didn’t make use of it, being bundled out for just 91 runs. The highest score of the innings was 15 made by both Trevor Mansingh (Canada) and Stephan Rajasasingham (Canada). Steven Taylor (USA) made 14 runs at the top of the order. But the Guyanese bowlers never allowed the batsmen to get comfortable.
Steven Sankar (3-5) and Gudakesh Moti-Kanhai(3-10) led the destruction for the Guyanese while Shawn Pereira had 2-14.
Guyana’s response got off to a shaky start as they lost three wickets along the way but the victory was virtually assured. Kamesh Yadram made 31 and Brian Sattur stroked 28 to lead the way. It was left up to opener, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, unbeaten on 12, and middle-order batsman, Shimron Hamraj (11) to get the victory. Guyana got home by seven wickets. Abrash Khan (Canada) took one wicket for three runs from one over. Steven Taylor and Trevor Manoosingh combined to produce eighteen tidy overs of spin bowling, each taking one wicket.
In the day’s two other opening round matches, Trinidad & Tobago beat Barbados by 40 runs, while Jamaica beat the Windward Islands by 31. T&T tallied 170 all out from 49.4 overs then bowled out Barbados for 130 (42 overs). Tevyn Walcott (Barbados) was the game’s individual top scorer with 45. Jamaica notched 156 all out (44.1 overs) then dismissed the Windward Islands for 125 (44.1 overs). Tristan Colemon made 35 for Jamaica.
ICC Americas play the Leeward Islands on Sunday, Jamaica face Trinidad & Tobago, and the Windward Islands play Guyyana. Those who sign-up on facebook at the WICB website can watch one game through live streaming each day of the tournament and monitor scores from the other two matches.
