Stratford “Tea Party” set for today

Nova Scotia meets Prince Edward Island (PEI) at Tea Hill Park, Straford, PEI today (Saturday, August 24, 2013) in the Maritimes 40-over Championship. Hopefully the weather will be kind and allow the game to take place. Heavy storms and lesser rains have resulted in various attempts to play games in the 2013 Maritimes 40-over championship to be called off, sometimes a day before games were scheduled.
The Nova Scotia Cricket Association selectors named the following team for this match: Hari Raghuraman (captain), Shryas Dhond (vice-captain), Arslan Khan (wicketkeeper), Shiv Sadhu, David Campbell, Shailendra Rao, Yash Gugle, Vivek Reddy, Amit Joshi, Tushar Sehgal and Daksh Talwar.
Cricket on PEI this summer has included games between the Stratford Royals and the Charlottetown Bobcats in the Chandrasekere Trophy series. Stratford Royals won game 1, played July 31, by 20 runs under the Duckworth/Lewis asset-based derivatives approach to cricket.
The D/L approach is, of course, applied regardless of the true risk or value of the underlying assets, which can make a big difference in developmental cricket. Tossing in a couple of inexperienced batsmen early in an innings in the hope of the opposition’s opening bowlers getting tired so later batsman, of greater experience can score runs merrily, can sometimes work in cricket. But the D/L counts the earlier batsman as having higher expected performance levels.
Anyway, the Stratford Royals hit 149 for three from 15 overs on July 31 but bad light brought a premature conclusion to the Bobcats innings with 110 runs on the board after 10 overs. The D/L approach had required 20 more runs, according to a report on the PEI facebook page.
The Stratford Royals also won game two. The Royals scored 109 for four from 12 overs, then bowled out the Bobcats for 86 in 11,3 overs.
A third game was also expected in this series, which helps the game continue to develop as part of the re-birth of cricket on Prince Edward Island and in eastern Canada.
Best wishes to those participating and watching today’s PEI-Nova Scotia match.
