Rain washes out Thursday Group A games in Abu Dhabi

Canada v UAE to complete Group A Round 5 on Friday
Rain washed out the two scheduled Group A matches in Abu Dhabi on Thursday (November 21), with a potentially interesting impact for Canada. Friday’s Canada v UAE game will complete the fifth round of group A games. If Canada can beat the UAE on Friday then Canada would jump into fourth place in the Group A standings ahead of Namibia, based on net run rate, before other teams start playing sixth round games in the round robin qualifying phase.

Today’s two washed out games in Abu Dhabi involved Ireland versus Italy, and Uganda v the USA. Italy, Uganda and the USA each three points, each having a record of one win, one no result and three defeats from five games. Ireland stays top of Group A with four wins and a no result for a total of nine points.
A Canadian win against the UAE would see the team go level on points with Namibia, just in time for Saturday’s game against Namibia. Canada’s net run rate (-0.165) is currently slightly better than Namibia (-0.178) and would, presumably, improve if Canada (W 1, L 3) beats the UAE (W 3, L 1) on Friday.
On Friday afternoon in Abu Dhabi, Ireland (W4, L 0, NR 1, 9 points) faces Uganda (W 1, L 3, NR 1, 3 points) and Hong Kong (W 4, L 1, 8 points) to open the sixth series of Group A round-robin games.
More rain and possible thunderstorms are similarly in the forecast for Friday, but the rain did not stop Thursday’s action in Group B in Dubai. Afghanistan beat Denmark by two wickets, Scotland beat Papua New Guinea by 84 runs and Kenya beat Bermuda by seven wickets.
Denmark made their best score of the tournament in today’s game, reaching 145 for three from twenty overs. Afghanistan appear to have been a hurry to win the game, but middle order runs, particularly Najibullah Zadrin’s 61 from 34 balls saw the Afghans to victory with more overs to spare (4.3) than wickets (2).
