Ravin Moorthy to step down as President

Cricket Canada have announced via their web site that Ravin Moorthy will not be seeking re-election, after 7 years with the board, two as president. His final report as president is available from Cricket Canada. He highlights achievements including
– revised selection policy and national tournament (NCL)
– constitutional reform and strategic planning
– increased Sport Canada funding
– establishment of the Hall of Fame
– improvements in financial position.

The report also includes the following announcements:-
“Firstly we have signed with a commercial partner that is tasked with bringing Twenty20 Cricket to Canada. The deal is significant in that it allows Cricket Canada to have the resources to bring in major teams and major games while at the same time providing us with much needed funding to run programs. The agreement also calls for academy’s to be opened throughout the country to support player development nationwide.
– The second deal brings matches from a FM professional T20 league to Canada. In addition to that, terms have been put together to have a Canadian based franchise in the league. As part of the spin-off of this, the perspective franchise owners (one of which would be Cricket Canada), the league and various levels of government intend to build a downtown stadium for matches to be played in. ”

It appears from the report that the new President is likely to be Vimal Hardat, from BC, who has been serving as vice-president, although no official announcement has been made.
In addition it appears from comments made by Moorthy on the Cricket Voice USA internet broadcast that CEO Doug Harnum is also leaving, not unexpected as his position was largely funded by ICC money, which is drying up.

Canada Cricket Online thanks Ravin for his service to the game in Canada in the challenging position of president, and although the performance of the national team has been disappointing, he leaves a legacy of solid achievements that perhaps get less attention than they should from the followers of cricketer in Canada.
