The St. Catharines Standard –
Through a series of private donations, the Niagara Cricket Centre at 5114 Thorold Townline Rd., on the border of Thorold and Niagara Falls, became a reality in time for the 2012 season. The land is owned by Navid Qureshi, Tan’s younger brother, who has given the club a 10-year lease at $50 a year.
“It was a weed mess and he had no plans to do anything with it for the next little while — 10 or 15 years,” Tan Qureshi said. “All he asked for was for us to make it look nice.”
What followed were donations of planning and legal work, construction drawings, grading, berms and seeding, a well, a hydro line, grass-cutting equipment and a portable classroom to serve as a rudimentary clubhouse.
“We’re happy to be the luckiest people in the world because we have all these sponsors and people who did a lot of work,” Qureshi said. “I don’t know where these angels came from.”
