This coming Saturday (June 21, 2014) marks the tenth anniversary of the CIMA Mayor’s Trophy in Toronto. This Spirit of Cricket promotional tournament has captured a number of ICC Americas Regional awards, as well as having gained recognition at the ICC Global level, since the first tournament in 2005. All are welcome and admission is free at Sunnybrook Park, Toronto, which carries an address of 1132 Leslie Street, Toronto.
Cars can enter the overall park grounds near the intersection of Eglinton Avenue East and Leslie Street. Various buses run along Eglinton Avenue East, and some go up Leslie Street, to bring public transit users close to the park. The opportunity to undertake a daily – or an annual – exercise walk, jog or run then exists. A climb, walk or jog up 110 or so steps shortens the route to the lower playing fields of Sunnybrook Park.
The TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) will play Metro in an exhibition game to mark this tenth anniversary at 11am. Welcoming speeches and ceremonial activities are due at midday (12pm). The annual exhibition game between the CEO’s XI and the Toronto Mayor’s XI will follow the ceremonials.
Games in three separate categories are due to begin at 9am with the championship games in each category expected to be start at 4pm, although the game to decide the Mayor’s Trophy on the north ground may start a touch later due to the midday ceremonials.
The north ground is to the two exhibition games plus games to decide the Mayor’s Trophy. The east ground is to be used for games to decide the CIMA Accountant’s Trophy and the west ground will see various teams meet to decide the CIMA Media Trophy.
The organizer’s emphasize the “CIMA Mayor’s Trophy is a cricket promotional event and should not be viewed as a tournament for professionals. As such, we encourage all participants to accommodate women and men who are new to the game and employees/members of the organization.” Games will be played as ten overs per side and a batsmen is to retire after scoring 25 runs.
Five teams are participating in the CIMA Mayor’s Trophy: Toronto Police Services, Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), GO Transit, Kaisoca Ladies and CIBC (Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce). The top two from in the standings after round-robin games will meet to decide the CIMA Mayor’s Trophy final.
Six teams, divided into two groups of three are due to participate in the CIMA Accountant’s Trophy on the East ground. The two group winners then meet to decide the 2014 accounting champions of cricket. Group 2A includes PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Ernst & Young and Deloitte. Group 2B comprises KPMG, Grant Thornton and the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) team.
The CIMA Media Trophy is similarly structured to the CIMA Accountant’s Trophy and is to be played on the west ground. The Toronto Star, The Toronto Sun and Rogers are in Group 3A, while the Group 3B participants are OMNI, The Globe and Mail and Metro.
So congratulations to the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants for efforts to promote the game of cricket in Canada, particularly in the Greater Toronto Area over the past ten years in partnership with the City of Toronto. CIMA’s global President, Mr. Keith Luck will be present as a Guest of Honour. Thanks also to the Forestry, Parks and Recreation division within the City of Toronto for providing the grounds on which the games are played. (EN)
