It is very hard to tell if there is such a thing as a right time to hang your boots but for me I guess now is the right time. All my career, I taught to never give up, I was fighting, I kept on improving, I always thought I can sort out all the problems I had with Cricket Canada. I wanted to retire a lot earlier but a lot of people told me: “You will just know when the time is right.”
Obviously there are other things that come into consideration. Where you are in your life and what’s the next best for you. Even if someone doesn’t tell you, you’ve been around long enough to know where you stand.
In the end it just comes down to knowing and being comfortable with it. And I just think, while I had been thinking about it, I was most comfortable doing it now. I wanted one more crack at representing my country and I was in talks with the new selection committee before Canada’s last tour in Div 2 but things things didn’t go as we thought it would.
I am now an established coach in England and India with over 400 youths between 2 countries training under me and I’m happy with that. I want to officially retire to give myself a closure to what has been a roller-coaster ride with Cricket Canada. There have been good times and bad times in my career. I have come across players who eat and sleep cricket and I came across guys who will stab you in your back first chance they get. That’s life and it doesn’t change for no one. It’s a cut throat industry where most of the time performance doesn’t count and our latest demotion shows that.
Over all I’m happy with my stance against CC to begin with because since I left Cricket Canada, I can see a lot of youngsters got a chance to play for our country because of my stance against CC’s structure and that’s what I wanted to begin with.
In life sometimes you have to go against what you believe, to get where you want but for me I would rather not get there if I have to change my beliefs. My parents always thought me to stand up for what is right and I am proud I did exactly that even if it led to my exit from the national team.
At the end I would like to thank everyone for their support and well wishes throughout my career as a junior and senior team player.
