Ruvindu Gunasekera has been present at a number of the Canadian Under-19 practice sessions at the Actionzone in recent weeks. Last Saturday (Jan 2, 2015) he led the warm-up physical training phase and later batted and bowled during net practices. He also had an individual batting session reacting to rising balls as part of his preparation for playing in Trinidad & Tobago with the ICC Americas team in the NAGICO Super50.
I know he expressed his gratitude to Cnadian Under-19s Head Coach Errol Barrow for providing the opportunity to participate in these training and net sessions. But Ruvindu helped provide a challenge to the bowlers in the
nets. The type of challenge that a number of the promising Australian, Indian, Sri Lankan, Pakistani and Afghan batsmen may provide in ICC U19 warm-up and group games in Bangladesh later this month.
It was, surely, useful that Ruvindu demonstrated to the latest collection of leading Canadian juniors facing the out-of-season challenge of an ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup that physical preparation through the various
exercises to improve fitness and conditioning plays an important part of the modern game.
Nikhil Dutta has also participated and assisted in some of the junior squads sessions at the Actionzone in Scarborough, Ontario since his return from playing in the Bangladesh Premier League. Clearly some of Canada’s most recent participants in an ICC U19 Cricket World Cup are keen to assist the squad’s preparations to face opponents who are all playing in-season, if not, in some cases, all year round.
