Sport Chek was named as the new lead financial sponsor of the Mayor’s School Cricket tournament at last week’s launching ceremony in Toronto (April 14, 2016). Sport Chek is part of FGL Sports. In a media release, Mr. Frederick Lecoq, Senior Vice President Marketing for FGL Sports stated “We are proud to help support the Mayor’s School Cricket Tournament. As the home of sport in Canada, Sport Chek believes in connecting people through many diverse activities enabling them to live a healthy and active lifestyle.”
FGL Sports, previously known as The Forzani Group Limited, became part of The Canadian Tire Corporation Limited in 2011. The company’s website states “FGL Sports Ltd is the largest and only national sports goods retailer in Canada. The Company sells a vast assortment of sports-related products – from athletic footwear to athletic/leisure apparel to the equipment required for performing a favourite sport.”
The Forzani Group developed under the business leadership of Mr. John Forzani in the years following his retirement from playing in the Canadian Football League with the Calgary Stampeders. Mr. Forzani died in October 2014.
Mr. Michael Lam, Chair of CIMA Canada, stated “CIMA Canada is pleased to be able to continue our youth cricket program and we are grateful for the support we received from the City of Toronto and Sport Check.”
Mr. Mahes Wickramasinghe, Chief Strategy Officer, Canadian Tire Corporation, was presented with an award during last week’s launch for his support of the tournament. Mr. Wickramasinghe has previously served on the CIMA Canada Board of Directors. Canadian Tire’s logo has featured in some recent CIMA Canada’s cricketing events as a sponsor.
