Elections for the positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary, and two Directors at large were bheld today by electronic voting, following a postponement of elections for 60 days at the Annual General Meeting. Each provincial association was eligible to vote with votes allocated as follows (as per the Cricket Canada constitution, based on number of active clubs):-
4 votes: Ontario, Alberta, BC
2 votes: Quebec, Saskatchewan
1 vote: Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, PEI, New Brunswick, Manitoba
Cricket Canada released the names of nominees:-
President: Amit Joshi, Praim Persaud, Bilal Syed, Ranjit Saini
Vice President: Rashpal Bajwa, Bilal Syed
Secretary: Zafar Khan, Bilal Syed
Directors (2 from): Shah Zafar, Ranjit Chaudhri, Manzoor Chaudhary, Melvin John, Mohammed Shaikh, Salman Nazeer
We understand that in a surprise result Ranjit Saini has returned as Cricket Canada president, with Rashpal Bajwa vice-president, Zafar Khan Secretary, and Manzoor Chaudhary & Mohammed Shaikh directors. Saini had previously tendered his resignation from the board, and as of the AGM Amit Joshi of Nova Scotia was the likely favourite. In the sixty days since the postponement of the elections it seems he has a change of heart and mustered enough support to return as President. Saini was president from 2010 to 2012.
The new board faces massive challenges. The national team has few fixtures and poor results has seen them plummet in ICC rankings in all forms of the game. ICC funding has dried up, and it seems as though their focus in the Americas is the USA. We wish them all the best in their endeavours, and encourage them to engage all levels of cricket in Canada in developing the game.
