Clarkson Cavaliers won the opening game of the 2016 Desmond Haynes U19 Cup on Monday (August 22, 2016). Cavaliers 183 proved sufficient to overcome Cooksville Warriors 127 all out (42.2 overs). Runs from the Cavaliers lower order made a big difference in a game where each side had one promising stand in the early overs.

Openers Kevin Singh (38) and Maahil Arshad (29) put 75 on the board for Cavaliers. Warriors lost an early wicket then things looked promising as Ravi Sandhu (51) and Mohammad Abubaker (20) added 67 for Warriors’ second wicket.

Canadian U19 international Mamik Luthra steadied the Cavaliers innings with a useful 39. Faisal Jamkhandi (13) and Harkaran Mann (12) reached double figures lower down the Cavaliers batting order.

Mamik Luthra picked up important wickets with his spin bowling. He had Warrior’s top scorer, Sandhu, stumped then caught and bowled Maulick Sondhi for 12. Luthra ended with 3 wickets for 18 runs from 8.2 overs.

Meigha Perera 4/40 from 10 overs and Rohan Patel 3/39 from 10 overs were the main wicket takers for the Warriors.

Cooksville Warriors play Meadowvale Mavericks on Tuesday (August 23), then the Mavericks play Clarkson Cavaliers on Wednesday (August 24) to complete the round robin phase. The top two teams in the round-robin will advance to Friday’s (August 26) final.

All matches in the 2016 Desmond Haynes U19 Cup are being played at the Iceland cricket oval, Mississauga with a scheduled start of 10am.
