Important Day in Colleges Championship

August 25, 2016: It is the last day of the round-robin phase, so Thursday (August 25, 2016) is an important day in the Canadian Colleges cricket championships at Maple Leaf Cricket Club, King City, Ontario as teams battle for the top two places in two pools. The top two from each pool qualify for Friday’s semi-finals, the winners of those two games advance to Friday afternoon’s Championship decided, the Final. So today is the first of two important days for the Canadian Colleges and University cricketers.

Centennial College and York University head Pool B with 2 wins from 2 games and will meet head-to-head in today’s scheduled games. Centennial has registered two big wins to date, so has an impressive net run rate (NRR) of +4.035. However, Seneca College (W 1, L 2, NRR -0.560) and York University (NRR +0.712) will each be looking for a win against Centennial College during Thursday’s play.

York University plays Wilfrid Laurier (W 0,L 2, NRR ) before the likely “big game” against Centennial College. York and Centennial may both have 3/0 records in a game that could decide first and second places in Pool B. Placings that will decide which team meets the Pool A winner in the semi-final.

Ryerson (W 1, L 2, NRR -2.914) play Laurier in the other Pool B game on today’s schedule.

University of Toronto and Sheridan College, currently leading Pool A with 2 wins from 2 games, meet early this morning. University of Toronto (W 2, L 2, NRR +1.625) is then scheduled to play McMaster University (W 1, L 1, NRR -0.775) and Sheridan will also be playing University of Waterloo (W 0, L 2, NRR -0.300). If McMaster can beat Toronto then Hamilton’s university might be able to qualify for the semi-finals with a win against George Brown College (W 0, L 2, NRR -2.011).

Rain or a storm that deposits a lot of water might make a difference to today’s proceedings, as might the infusion of some players who may not have been available for games played on Tuesday and Wednesday. Hopefully it will not rain at the King City cricket grounds. Particularly as a heavy storm might have an impact on the ability to play on Friday, or even the weekend for clubs involved in the Toronto and District Cricket Association and the Canadian Corporate Cricket League.
