1970 Ontario Champions remember achievement

The digital enhancement of an old photograph was the inspiration as a few old cricketers met recently at Inverhaugh CC to remember and celebrate their achievements of the sixties and seventies. The University of Guelph Cricket Club won Hamilton and District League and were Ontario cricket champions. The team were recognized by the then Premier of Ontario William Davis for being 1970 Provincial Champions of Cricket.

The Ontario championship game that year was played against Victoria Park Cricket Club in Toronto. Victoria Park was spearheaded by former West Indies Test cricketer, Tom Dewdney and Jerome Mellow, who had played for Windward-Leeward Islands in West Indies. Guelph’s bowling was outstanding and dismissed Victoria Park C.C. for 120. When Guelph batted, they were in trouble at 57 for 5 wickets. Good batting by the middle order and tailenders supported Mike Horsfall, who attacked the bowling after Dewdney and Mellow had completed their bowling quota. Guelph was able to achieve victory.

University of Guelph CC had members from Australia, England, Guyana, India, Jamaica, Kenya, St.Vincent and Trinidad and Tobago. It was comprised of students, a pair of professors as well as residents from the community.

Those present at the reunion were Bart Singh (of Inverhaugh CC), Hanoman Singh, Dr. Carlton Gyles, Dr. Geoff Edwards (former President of the Canadian Cricket Association) and Hector Lachmansingh. Ashton Hughes joined in by speaker phone from Ottawa. Dr. Ron Swanwick has kept in contact from Australia.
