Strong tradition continues with CIMA Mayor’s Cricket Tournament

“I couldn’t believe the support I had from (education director) Tony Pontes,” Mendis said. “The game happens on the field, but off the field you need people like Tony to make it happen.”

Mendis says 75 schools across Mississauga, both public and Catholic, have cricket teams, and the city itself has seven cricket pitches with two more coming at Danville Park next year.

Pontes, set to retire later this year after nearly 40 years with the Peel board, has fond memories of his first meeting with Ranil too.

“We’re always a bit hesitant when someone offers something because we expect that they also want something in return, but they wanted nothing in return,” Pontes said.

“CIMA wanted nothing except to promote the growth of an international sport that their members happen to love and support.”
