Brampton has two pressing dilemmas and a local developer thinks he has one solution: To bring its diverse community together and breathe much-needed life into the struggling downtown core, why not build a cricket stadium.
“When I came to Canada in 1965 the Italians wanted a soccer field,” says John Cutruzzola, principal of the Inzola Group, “so they were told, ‘Sure, we’ll give you a field, in your little neighbourhood over there.’ That’s not how you welcome people who are becoming just as important to your city as anyone else.”
Cutruzzola has proposed to city council a ten thousand seat multi-use stadium that could be used for baseball and world-class cricket, a sport with a religious following among many of Brampton’s immigrant communities, particularly South Asians who represent a third of the population.
