Markham cricket stars pack for England (Markham Economist & Sun)

Siddhanth Shekhar and Rizwan Khan share a common bond — a love for the game of cricket. Either watching the game or playing it. In fact the two Markham residents are good enough to be part of a 12-player contingent going to England July 19 to 26 to improve their skills by playing a series of friendlies against local clubs. A recent graduate of Bur Oak Secondary School, Shekhar, 18, and Khan, 16, entering Grade 11 at Middlefield Collegiate this fall, were named to the CIMA Cricket Across the Pond team, comprised of high school cricketers from the Greater Toronto Area. Shekhar and Khan received the good news just before the school year wrapped up. Each was honoured to be part of a select and privileged group.
“It’s really an amazing opportunity to be going (to England),” said Shekhar, a batsman-keeper. “To make the team was difficult because cricket is becoming a huge sport and it’s growing in Canada. For this opportunity, allowing kids to go abroad and play the game, it’s great.”
