The national women’s team took on Sri Lanka in their opening match at the World T20 qualifier in Ireland today and suffered a one-sided defeat. Canada won the toss and chose to bat. They got off to a slow start, losing two wickets in advancing to 18 from six overs. Three more wickets fell in the 9th and 10th overs to reduce Canada to 22/5. A run-out attempting a 3rd run meant 33/8 and Canada failed to bat out their overs, all out for 44. Only Suthershini Sivanantham managed double figures. Sri Lanka took little time in recording a comprehensive 9 wicket win inside of 7 overs. Coach George Codrington posted to Facebook before the match “The players are looking forward to the tournament and the experience of playing at another level. The girls are nervously excited and looking forward to our first match on Tuesday. Furthermore, they are aware of the historic nature of this game and regardless of the outcome it is a forward step for Canadian women cricket.”
