Canada faced a tough challenge in today’s match against hosts Ireland in the Women’s World T20 qualifier, and came up well short, losing by 77 runs. Clare Shillington, fresh from an unbeaten century against Japan, completed a 40-ball half century after Ireland reached 83/1 after 10 overs. Twins Isobel and Cecilia Joyce, sisters of international batsman Ed Joyce, also formed part of the Irish batting line-up but failed to make an impression on their joint birthday. Captain Turik tried seven bowlers, with the 7th, Monali Patel being most successful, taking two wickets with her off-breaks. Shillington was run out for 81 off 61 balls, made out of 134. Ireland eventually made 146/7. In response, Canada made a much better start with the bat than in their opener against Sri Lanka, but quickly fell well behind the required run-rate. After 10 overs they were 34/2, needing well over 10/ over. Wickets then fell regularly as Canada fell to 69 all out from 19.2 overs. Durriya Shabbir top-scored with 23.
