An unbroken stand of 77 for the sixth wicket between Timroy Allen and Srinivasa Santhanam carried the USA to a five wicket win against Canada in Abu Dhabi with one ball to spare today (Friday, November 15). Santhanam reached 28 not out with the winning boundary while Allen had reached his 50 from the previous ball. Harvir Baidwan had taken two wickets and Junaid Siddiqui one in an earlier phase when Canada made inroads into a bright USA start. The USA slipped from 36 for one to 41 for four. But a sixth wicket “recovery” became a transformation as the USA reached 138 for five wickets after 19.5 overs. The critical moment was likely when Allen was dropped at long-off- an easy chance – early in his innings.
Junaid Siddiqui took two wickets for 16 from his four overs that had helped peg the USA’s earlier innings progress.
Canada scored 137 for six from twenty overs. Jimmy Hansra topped the scoring with 39 from 34 balls, Rizwan Cheema hit 28 from 21 balls, Ashish Bagai made 20 and Hiral Patel 18. US seamers Adam Sanford and Elmore Hutchinson each took two wickets and Neill McGarrell took one wicket for 18 runs from his four overs.
Canada will look to rebound from today’s disappointing result against Ireland in Group A action on Saturday.
Ireland opened this ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier with a 32 run win against Namibia. Ireland posted 166 for five (20 overs) with Namibia reaching 134 for seven when the twenty overs ran out. Irish opening bat Paul Stirling hit 52.
In Friday’s other two Group A matches, Shaiman Anwar lead a successful run chase for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) against Uganda, and Hong Kong beat Italy by seven wickets. Anwar’s 54 from 38 balls was the major innings of the UAE-Uganda match. Uganda struggled to 88 for eight from 20 overs. UAE replied with 89 for two from 14.2 overs. Italy scored 110 for eight in twenty overs against Hong Kong. Carl Sandri top-scored for Italy with 41, but Hong Kong opener Waqas Barkat provided 51 not out as his team reached a winning 111 for three with eight balls to spare. (EN)
