Alberta U17 33 all out (26.3 overs), Ontario Reds U17 34/1 (7.1 overs)
Ontario Greens 190 (50 overs), British Columbia U17 41/3 (15 overs) at last Monday update.

Ontario Reds top-scorer Thursaanth Anantharajah in action against Alberta U17's.

Ontario Reds Under-17’s raced to a nine wicket win against Alberta U17’s on Monday (June 30) at Centennial Park, Etobicoke, Ontario as cricket’s Under-17 version of the Canada Cup began. Alberta U17’s struggled for runs in the early going, then lost two wickets during the sixth over, bowled by Red’s seamer Prushoth Wijayraj. Red’s captain and Canadian Under-19 international Abraash Khan then took two wickets in the seventh over that left the young Albertans struggling on 17 for four wickets. Opening bat P Sharma hung on until falling leg-before wicket the opening ball of over twelve. His six runs lead the Albertan batting on this day.

A legside wide that crossed the fine leg boundary at the south end of the ground must have produced the most runs from a single ball in this innings. At least one of the later batsmen showed signs of having seen much T20-style cricket – or, perhaps fencing from the Olympic games – on TV when a more conventional straight bat might have carried the teams innings deeper into the allocated 50 overs on a rather hot day.

Alberta U17’s innings came to an end after 33 runs had been registered and 26.3 overs bowled. The second P Sharma was one not out after 41 balls when the last wicket fell to a stumping.

The stumping to end Alberta’s innings meant Harman Sidhu took three wickets for no runs from 3.3 overs. Yagnesh Patel took two wickets for three runs, Abraash Khan took two for nine from six overs and Prushoth Wijayraj took two for 18 from five overs (including the legside wide that reached the boundary).

Ontario Reds opening bat Arslan Khan scored the game’s only boundary from the bat before being bowled for 9 by Jalal Uddin. The wicket fell with 21 runs scored after 3.4 overs. Captain Abraash Khan joined left-hander Thursaanth Anantharajah in a second wicket partnership that saw the Reds to victory after 7.1 overs. Anantharajah made 14 not out and Abraash Khan 5 not out. Uddin took one for eight from three overs.

Play continues at Centennial Park in this tournament on Tuesday – Canada Day : July 1st. The complete scores for Monday’s game between British Columbia and Ontario Greens will, presumably, become more broadly known. Ontario Greens (playing in yellow and red) scored 190 all out from 50 overs while British Columbia was on 41 for three from 15 overs when the last electronic scoring update was registered on Monday. Greens captain Harsh Thakkar lead with 58 runs. Akash Gill scored 36 runs and had taken 3 wickets for 15 runs from six overs as of the last available computerized scoring update on Monday.

Happy Canada Day.
