Gunasekera to captain Americas team

The ICC Americas Team, led by Canadian player, Ruvindu Gunasekera, will take wing to Trinidad & Tobago tomorrow (4 January) to take part in the “Nagico Super-50” cricket tournament conducted by WICB. It will start on the 7-Jan and concludes on the 24-Jan.

Eight regional teams including all Caribbean National players will be in action and the teams are divided in to two groups. Americas are pitted against very strong opposition with hosts T&T, Guyana and Jamaica. The other group – Leeward, Windward Islands and a Combined Campuses XI – will battle hard to come in to the knock out round. They will play twice against each other in the same group and the first two of each group will play in Semi Finals.
America’s fixtures will be played in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago Island. Ruvindu will have the services of five other Canadian national players, namely Nitish Kumar, Srimantha Wijeyeratne, Navneet Dhaliwal, Hamza Tariq & Jeremy Gordon. The rest of the team comprises players from USA and will include Steven Taylor, Akeem Dodson, Timil Patel, Hammad Shahid, Alex Amsterdam, Daniel Ahmed, Ali Khan, Mohammed Ghouse & Timroy Allen.
Canadian Derek Perera, the Head Coach of Overseas Cricket Academy has been given the task of guiding the team as coach and will be assisted by Australian coach Mike Young and Tom Evans, ICC Americas regional Director will also accompany the Americas Xi to Trinidad &Tobago.
This will be a great opportunity for all players selected and some of the best performers will be given the opportunity of playing in the Caribbean Premier League, which will be played in West Indies later in the year.
