Canada, after facing tough opposition in their first two matches of the world T20 qualifier, beat Japan in what was effectively a consolation match. Japan made just 97/5 from their 20 overs, a total that was helped by the 27 wides contributed by the Canadian bowlers. Canada lost their first 5 wickets for 46, with Sivanantham contributing 32. Durriya Shabbir (36*) and Sheryl Tittlemier (10*) put together a 54 run partnership that led to a last over win.
This means Canada’s women will now face Thailand in the Shield Competition – the battle for 5th to 8th places – in the ICC World Cup qualifier on Monday. The winner advances to the Shield Final to decided fifth place. Japan will play Zimbabwe in the other Shield semi-final.

Updates on Canada Women’s warm-up games on July 18, 2013 – Canada- Japan today
Scorecards for the three women’s international games involving Canada, Scotland and Thailand on July 18, 2013 are now available on Cricket Archive. So a better summary of those games is now available just before Canada prepares meet Japan in the last game of the Group phase of the ICC Women’s T20 qualifier in Dublin.
It would certainly be useful if Canada can break the 100 run barrier, as was achieved in the first warm-up game against Scotland on July 18. Similarly useful would be repeats of the economic bowling performance of Saniya Zia against Thailand who only conceded six runs from four overs by a collection of Canada’s bowlers.
Scotland hit 168 for seven from 20 overs against Canada. A second wicket stand of 68 in 6.1 overs saw the scoreboard ticking along before Fiona Urqhart was caught for 43. Elizabeth Priddle was Urqhart’s partner in this stand. Priddle was eventually run out for the innings top score of 53, made from 46 balls, to leave Scotland on 129 for five in the sixteenth over. Kari Anderson and Scottish captain Charlotte Bascombe each made 20 in the closing overs. Canadian captain Mikaela Turik took four wickets for 34 runs from her four overs.
Monali Patel and Suthershini Sivanantham scored at about six runs an over in a partnership of 69 for Canada’s first wicket. The stand ended when Sivanantham was run out. Patel fell lbw in the next over. Durriya Shabbir made 16 not out in the latter part of the innings ,which ended with Canada on 106 for three wickets.
Earlier, Shabbir had taken one wicket for 22 runs from her four overs; one of the most economic of the Canadian bowlers on the game. Left-arm pace bowler Lorraine Kenton proved the most economic bowling two overs for four runs.
The Canada-Thailand game brought together two teams with little advance knowledge about each other. Canada struggled against the Thai bowlers, losing one wicket in the first over, two in the second and during the third over, Canada’s running total reached one run for the loss of four wickets. Mahewish Khan made fourteen runs, before becoming the seventh batter to be out when 34 runs were on the board in the 16th over. Mikaela Turik made 22 not out to carry Canada to 58 for eight when the 20 overs ran out. Turik’s inninga included two fours and a six.
Thai opening bowler Nattaya Boochatham took two wickets for five runs from four overs and her opening partner Chantam took two for seven in four overs. Prathanmir made 26 not out and captain Somnarin Tippoch 27 not out as Thailand’s women reached a winning 62 for one wicket after 14 overs.
Scotland also played Thailand. Thailand won the toss, batted and made 116 for six from twenty overs, Somnarin Tippoch making 49 not out. Opener Urqhart hit 34 runs from 19 balls and the Scots lost three batters for low scores before White (28) and Anderson (25*) steered the path to victory. Scotland made 117 for six wickets.
Canada’s women will be hoping for a win against Japan today before entering the playoffs for 5th thru 8th places on Monday.
