CIMA Mayor’s Cricket gains print media publicity

The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) playoffs of the sixth annual Chartered Institute of Management Accountant’s (CIMA) Mayor’s School Cricket Championships gained publicity in “South Asian Generation Next” (June 9, 2016), “Hindi Abroad” (June 10, 2016), “The Weekly Post” (June 10, 2016) and the English-language “Asian Post” section of “The Urdu Post” (June 9, 2016).
The coverage in “South Asian Generation Next” includes 14 photos. Ten of the photos feature participating school cricket teams, four feature key guests, sponsors representatives and event organizers. Brampton Mayor Linda Jeffery was the chief guest. The report mentions local MPP Vic Dhillon and Councillor Gurpreet Dhillon attended the championship playoffs. Mahes Wickramasinghe, Chief Strategy Officer – Canadian Tire, spoke on behalf of lead sponsors’ Sport Chek and parent company Canadian Tire.

Reports in “South Asian Generation Next” and “The Weekly Voice” confirm the winners of the four sections of the 2016 CIMA Mayor’s School Cricket Championship as: Sunny View Middle School, Brampton (Girls Middle Schools); Charles Gordon Middle School, Toronto (Boys Middle Schools); York Memorial CI, Toronto (Girls High Schools) and Woburn CI, Toronto (Boys High Schools).

Coverage in “Hindi Abroad” includes a photo of Brampton’s Sunny View Middle School girls team, winners of the Girls Middle Schools GTA championship. York Memorial Girls team was selected for colour photo coverage supporting the report in “The Weekly Voice”. The players are pictured wearing shirts with the Canadian Tire and Sport Chek logos

The “Asian Post” section within the “Urdu Post” mentions ATN’s (Asian Television Network’s) Kenty Khan acted as Master of Ceremonies for the presentations. ATN is noted as a media sponsors of this event.

There did not seem to be any Canadian cricket content in a range of newspapers I gathered around the Hurontario/Dundas intersection in Mississauga on Friday afternoon (June 10, 2016), although some locally produced Sri Lankan newspapers may well feature the CIMA Mayor’s GTA cricket playoffs.

“South Asian Focus” (June 9, 2016) and “South Asian MidWeek” (June 7, 2016) have reports about the first high school Kabaddi Festival. A Peel District School Board trustee said this was the first Kabbadi high school tournament in North America.

I must admit that my survey is incomplete if there was any written report that was not supported by any photo about the CIMA Mayor’s GTA playoffs in a number of newspapers published in a range of South Asian languages, such as Urdu, Gurjarati, Hindi and Punjabi. The Caribbean, Afro-Caribbean and Indo-Caribbean newspapers I found on Friday’s travels did not seem to have any Canadian cricket content.

Some of the range of South Asian and Caribbean community orientated newspapers do not print on a weekly basis, so coverage of the CIMA GTA Championships may be included in the next issue of such newspapers. A tournament on June 4th would not, for example, be expected to appear in the June issue of a monthly newspaper, but the July issue has potential to include a report and a picture or two. (EN)
